Description
A delight for the little ones… And the not so little ones!
We owe the discovery of chocolate to Hernan Cortez when he landed in April 1519 on the coasts of Tabasco. When the inhabitants caught sight of his armour and his bearded white face, mounted on a horse, they took him for the god Quetzalcóatl because of a prophecy that proclaimed that this god had gone to conquer new lands in the east and that he would come back through his descendants. They lead this conquistador to the flamboyant palace of Emperor Montezuma where, as a sign of hospitality and to honour the god of cocoa cultivation, he is offered a “xocolatl” in a gold goblet encrusted with tortoiseshell. Montezuma wants him to share his passion for this thick, honey-sweetened drink that he loves for its seductive bitterness, enhanced by chili and spices. His daily ration is 50 cups a day! He thus tastes hot chocolate flavoured with cinnamon, pepper, cloves, achiote seeds and, presuming a food discovery, he is first astonished by the opulence of the goblets!
