For the happiness of children… And adults!
It was Hernán Cortés who discovered chocolate when he landed on the shores of Tabasco in April 1519. Seeing his armor, his white face, and his beard, mounted on a horse, the locals mistook him for the god Quetzalcoatl, as a prophecy had foretold that this god had gone to conquer new lands in the east and would return through his descendants. They took the conquistador to the flamboyant palace of Emperor Montezuma where, as a sign of hospitality and to honor the god of cacao cultivation, he was offered a "xocolatl" in a gold goblet inlaid with tortoiseshell. Montezuma wanted to share his passion for this thick, honey-sweetened beverage, which he loved for its aphrodisiac bitterness accentuated by spices and chili pepper. His daily ration amounted to 50 goblets! He tastes the hot chocolate, flavored with cinnamon, pepper, cloves, achiote seeds, and, if he suspects a culinary discovery, he is first stunned by the abundance of the cups!
